Article from the Cincinnati Enquirer

In what seems to be a nearly annual tradition in the Queen City, the future of the city’s completed, but never used, subway tunnels is pondered.  While the proposed light rail was never completed in the late ’20’s, the right-of-ways did serve future use for I-75 (the tunnels’ western exits can be seen between the Western Hills Viaduct and Hopple St exits) and the Norwood Lateral.

If the tunnels do end up being filled, I feel fortunate that Laura and I were able to tour them last October after sitting on a waiting list for two years.  The details of which are still waiting to fill the post I’ve had languishing in the drafts folder since, well, last October.

It was an incredible experience, as we decided to walk the over 4 miles to cover the tunnels’ entire length.  Very few of our tour group elected to walk as far, leaving us in total darkness barring 2-C and 2-AA Mag Lites (minus spare batteries), and the frequent flash from my camera.

A few of us at work agreed the tunnels should be used as a bar/nightclub with the apropos name, “Under the Rhine.”
